THE FOREIGN HONORARY MEMBERS OF THE MACEDONIAN SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTE FROM WESTERN EUROPE AND THEIR ACTIVITIES IN DEFENSE OF THE BULGARIAN NATIONAL CAUSE

The article presents the scientific and public activities related to the Bulgarian national question of eight world-renowned scholars and public figures from Western Europe, selected for their contributions as foreign members of the Macedonian Scientific Institute: Sir Edward Boyle from Great Britain, Prof. Gustav Weigand and Prof. Hans Koch from Germany, Prof. Andre Mazon, Georges Desbons, Justin Godart, Prof. Leon Beaulieux and Prof. Leon Lamouche from France. Brief biographical notes are given for each of them, their works in the fields of language, history and ethnography are indicated, and their research on Macedonia is discussed in detail. Their analyzes of the national liberation movement of the Macedonian and Thracian Bulgarians and of the situation in Macedonia, Thrace, Dobrudja and the Western Outskirts after the signing of the Neuilly Treaty are presented. Last but not least, the policy on the Macedonian issue of the scientists’ countries of origin is examined.
